This project could not have been executed by one person. It was truly a collaborative effort and I would like to give special thanks to the great crew that worked on the mural:
I have been experimenting with making abstract gestural paintings using remote control cars and other children’s toys and for years. In this project the GPS tracks provided an interesting way to remove the artists hand from the painting process. GPS and other surveillance technology has often been used in disturbing ways but the goal of this project is to use tracking technology to create something visually interesting and engaging, something that everyone passing by can enjoy. I am thrilled to have had the chance to do this project with a great crew in a perfect urban environment right in front of the Navy Yard in Brooklyn.

BNYDC intends to seek proposals on an annual basis thus making this section of the wall a canvas for the many talented artists, designers and craftspeople that call the Yard home.
"A Day in a Life at the Brooklyn Navy Yard" follows a selection of 10 people that work in the Yard. Using their smartphones, participants were encouraged to track a typical day commuting into and around the Yard using a free downloadable GPS tracking app. The result is a collection of abstract and colorful lines that represent the vibrant and collective energy of A Day in a Life in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
In April 2014, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) released a Yard-wide request for proposals to beautify this 66-foot stretch of wall on the Yard’s perimeter along the Brooklyn Greenway. Yard tenants were encouraged to submit proposals from a variety of disciplines including public art, craftsmanship and greenscape installation. BNYDC selected Paul Campbell’s "A Day in a Life at the Brooklyn Navy Yard" for its creativity and unique use of technology and art to share the stories of those who work within the Yard with our surrounding communities outside the wall.

limitless possibilities.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a special place where you get to experience life at a larger scale, from the historic buildings and fathomless dry docks to soaring cranes that are building the future. BNY supports your business and gives you the room to grow. It's an excellent place to cross pollinate with a diverse array of companies.

I am a painter. The Navy Yard is a place to get away from it all and do my art work. It really doesn't feel like New York City once I go through the gate. My studio, in Building 131 is on a large pier, my windows overlook Dry Dock 4, I can see most of Wallabout Bay where there's always something interesting happening. From tankers and tug boats to waterfowl including a pair resident loons.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is my landlord, and it's also an organization that believed in our idea of a rooftop farm, and took the plunge to enter a lease and relationship with us.  It's also a beautiful piece of property filled with entrepreneurs, business owners, crafters, and makers.  It has lots of history which I don't even know, it has a great view, and lots of fun secrets.  When you always feel good entering place, that's good sign, and I always feel good when I enter the Navy Yard.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard has become a meaningful place in my life, a place where I've witnessed people from all walks of life come together and share stories and ideas, where veterans and defense workers can be heard, honored, and remembered, and where the vibrant energy of the thousands of people who work here today - entrepreneurs, artists, craftspeople, firefighters, engineers, architects, and factory workers - can be felt just by passing through the gates or visiting BLDG 92.
